The Art of Juxtaposition

In the interior design world styling a home with contrasting design elements is a sophisticated art form. It creates depth, authenticity, and more importantly a personalized homey feel. For some this concept may be terrifying, but that fear is what can lead your home into looking like a showroom. Maintaining this mantra “it doesn’t have to match, it just has to coordinate” and following the tips below will give you the confidence to master this trend!

Style || A love for rustic and modern or traditional and bohemian styles do not have to be mutually exclusive! Pair that antique farm table with mod leather chairs – mixing vintage with new will build a truly individualized space. Or take a traditional Chesterfield sofa, pair it with an oriental rug and top it with an acrylic cocktail table! These opposing design elements don’t sound like they would go together, but are actually just the right amount of contrast; creating an intriguing space that looks like it has a story to tell.

Texture || A balance in texture is vital in making a home feel cozy. Most modern furniture features clean lines and sleek silhouettes which can look sterile if not softened with a plush texture. Drape your leather sofa with a fur throw and incorporate fresh greenery into your design! Plants are a fantastic way to add texture, color, and air to your space! Create interest by mixing patterns whether it be an abstract rug paired with a geometric throw or striped pillows and floral drapes.

Color || Whether you pair dark, moody hues with a bright color or you paint an accent wall, contrasting colors will create a dynamic space that will still feel balanced. Dark walls are the perfect way to make bright shades really pop!
